The socio-cultural body of the south-south region, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed shock and sorrow over the demise of Nigeria Army, General Godwin Osagie Abbe (rtd.), described him as a rare gem, a nationalist, and a top blass in Nigeria army.

PANDEF in a press release issued and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Dr. Christopher Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF through its national chairman, Amb. Godknows Igali, OON, lauded the late General’s uncompared and unchallenged service to the nation, commending his unbeatable records as the Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Interior.

While noting that the late Army general distinguished himself and his career before the right thinking members of the society, Amb. Godknows Igali, OON said,

“it was not a surprise that Late Gen Abbe paraded a high level of intellectual capacity as he was a product of the United States Army Infantry School Fort Moore, Georgia, Ghana Armed Forces Staff College and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic studies, Kuru”

“His exemplary leadership as the Commandant of the National War College, as it was then called, remains a reference point not just in Nigeria but across Africa as a whole,”.

It would be recalled that General Abbe, joined the Nigerian Army in 1967 during the turbulent civil war, was celebrated for his bravery and unwavering commitment to national unity. His service, marked by integrity and dedication, saw him rise to the rank of Major General before his retirement. As the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, he was admired for his selflessness and commitment to the welfare of his troops.

“Was a trailblazer and a selfless General who believed in the welfare of his troops. Those who served under him as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army can still attest to this till date. We miss a rare gem.

“His legacy extends beyond his family, Edo State, and the Niger Delta region, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s unity and progress will be remembered by the entire nations.

“While condoling with his family, the people of Edo State, and all Nigerians over this irreparable loss. PANDEF described General Abbe as a patriot, mentor, and trailblazer whose impact will endure for generations”.

PANDEF prayed for the repose of the late General’s soul, expressing hope that his legacy would inspire future generations of leaders.
