NYCN Decries Sand Price Hike in Ughelli North LGA

*Demand for immediate reversal of the price increase

UGHELLI – The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ughelli chapter has strongly condemns in its entirety the recent announcement by the Sand and Dredgers Union to increase the price of a trip of sand to ₦60,000, effective this January.

This abitary increase, coupled with the union’s restrictive practices, has generated widespread discontent and apprehension among the populace.

It would be recall that a trip of sand was sold for ₦25,000 before the union increased it to ₦45,000.00, citing rising diesel costs. However, the latest hike lacks justification, sparking concerns about the union’s intentions.

According to the chairman of NYCN Ughelli north chapter, Comr. Efekemorae Emmanuel, the price increase will have far-reaching consequences, including;
Higher construction costs, leading to increased house rents and reduced affordability, economic hardship for low-income families and individuals coiple with present hardship in the country.

He noted there would be restrictive trade practices, preventing the importation of cheaper sand from neighboring local government areas.

NYCN in a press release signes by its chairman, Comr. Efekemorae Emmanuel urge the Sand and Dredgers Union to reconsider the decision and revert to the previous price.

While demanding for immediate reversal of the price increase, an end to restrictive practices capable of hindering the importation of sand from neighbouring areas, said the union must provide transparent reasoning for any price adjustments.

NYCN called for engagement with stakeholders to establish fair and sustainable pricing, saying that National Youth Council of Nigeria will not stand idly by while the Sand and Dredgers Union exploits our people.

“We demand transparency, fairness and accountability in all areas that concern our people”, the press release stated.
