UGHELLI – Committed to ameliorating the suffering of flood-affected victims in Delta State, the Delta State government under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in conjunction with the Bank of Industry on Thursday, November 14, 2024, doled relief materials and food items worth millions of naira to the affected persons.
While addressing the affected communities in Uhweru and Evwreni kingdoms, Olorogun Jaro Egbo disclosed the governor Oborevwori’s intentions to bring succums to Deltans in the face of present economic hardship especially those affected by the ravaging flood.
In his address, he expressed the council’s sympathy and readiness to identify with the communities affected by the devastating flood.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep empathy that I stand before you today, in the midst of one of the most challenging times our communities have faced in recent months. The devastating flood that swept through the Uwheru and Evwreni Kingdoms of our dear Ughelli North Local Government Area has left many of our people in dire need of support and assistance.
“As your elected representative, I cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of my people. The floodwaters have destroyed homes, livelihoods, and vital infrastructure, displacing countless families and leaving many without access to the necessities of life. It is in times like these that the true strength of our community and the compassion we have for one another is most needed.
“Today, we gather here not only to witness the presentation of relief materials but also to demonstrate that we are united in our resolve to rebuild, to heal, and to move forward together. I am deeply grateful for the efforts of those who have contributed to making this gesture of solidarity possible, especially the State Government through the MORE AGENDA of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff F. O. Oborevwort, the Executive Governor of Delta State. The Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), philanthropists, and other stakeholders have played a crucial role in bringing us to this moment.
“On behalf of the Ughelli North Local Government Council, I wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to all the victims of the flood. We know that no material assistance can fully restore what has been lost, but we hope that the items we are presenting today will go some way in easing the burdens of our affected brothers and sisters.
“The relief materials being presented today include foodstuffs, mattresses, and other essential items. We believe these will help alleviate some of the immediate challenges faced by those affected, as we continue to work with other levels of government, organizations, and community groups to provide further support.
“However, our responsibility does not end with this presentation. We are committed to ensuring that our communities are better prepared for future natural disasters, and we will be working with relevant authorities to enhance flood mitigation measures, improve drainage systems, and promote awareness about environmental conservation”.
Meanwhile, the presentation of the items was marred with chaos by some of the affected persons at Ohoro with uncleared circumstances as they refused to comment when contacted.
