UGHELLI – Irked by the recent political turmoil in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, involving suspected supporters of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Delta State Government has condemned the political disturbance in its entirety, warning that no individual or group will be allowed to truncate the peace of the state.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this on Friday in Asaba, the Delta State Capital, saying that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed security agencies to investigate the viral video of the incident and ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
According to him, the Oborevwori administration maintains zero tolerance for political violence, thuggery and intimidation, regardless of party affiliation. He stressed that political campaigns are not a licence for violence and that disagreements must never threaten community peace and citizens’ safety.
The government reaffirmed that every political party, candidate and supporter has the right to campaign freely and peacefully in any part of Delta without harassment or obstruction, provided such activities remain lawful.
Aniagwu noted that the administration will continue to take its More Agenda and record of achievements to Deltans and will not encourage supporters to resort to confrontation. He charged leaders, candidates, youth and community groups to restrain their followers and play by the rules.
“Political affiliation is not a shield against the law. If anybody commits an offence, the law should take its course. No election or ambition is worth the life of any Deltan,” he said.
He therefore urged security agencies to stay vigilant and guarantee a level playing field for all, assuring that government will continue to support lawful political activities while dealing decisively with anyone who undermines public peace.
Meanwhile, allegations have emerged from the NDC camp about who is responsible for the disturbance. The NDC House of Representatives candidate for Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency, Dr Obiuwevbi Ominimini, accused Governor Oborevwori and the APC of involvement in the alleged attack on NDC supporters.
Those allegations remain claims and should not be treated as facts pending the outcome of investigations. Reports also indicate that the police had not publicly confirmed the identities of the alleged attackers or established their political affiliation at the time of reporting.
