Military Partnership Key to Delta’s Peace, Financial Stability — Oborevwori

ASABA – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major General Everest Okoro, to strengthen security collaboration and adopt proactive measures to protect lives, property and critical economic assets across the Niger Delta.
According to the governor, joint efforts remain crucial to safeguarding lives, property, and oil infrastructure across the Niger Delta.
Oborevwori made the call recently in Asaba the Delta State capital during an official courtesy visit by the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major General Everest Okoro, who also functions as the Land Component Commander for Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Asaba.
While welcoming the military chief, the governor described the 6 Division as a critical operational pillar for regional stability and pledged his government’s continued assistance to help the Army succeed in its mission.
He prayed for the GOC’s guidance and wisdom, assuring him that Delta State would remain a reliable partner to the military.
He highlighted that Delta’s current peaceful climate stems from steady coordination between state authorities and security forces. Given Delta’s standing as a leading energy producer, Oborevwori emphasised that keeping the area secure directly protects Nigeria’s wider economic health.
“Delta State is very key to the economy of Nigeria, and we rely on the security agencies to do their work because the peace we are enjoying today is the result of collaboration between the state and the security agencies,” the governor stated, adding that commercial activities only flourish where safety is guaranteed.
“If this region is safe, the economy will go up. If there is unrest in this region, the economy will go down,” Oborevwori warned, urging the Army leadership to deal decisively with criminal elements.
Recalling his previous involvement with security efforts and the Presidential Amnesty Programme, he noted that working closely with armed forces has long been central to his approach. To demonstrate this commitment, the governor pointed to recent logistical and infrastructural support provided by the state, including new residential quarters for personnel at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor and continuous backing for the 63 Brigade in Asaba.
In his remarks, Major General Okoro explained that the visit formed part of a routine tour to inspect units under his command following his recent appointment.
He commended Governor Oborevwori’s leadership and ongoing investments in security infrastructure and troop welfare. Okoro affirmed that protecting critical oil and gas installations, gathering actionable intelligence, and executing joint operations alongside other security teams remain his main priorities for the region. He also praised the strong relationship already existing between the state and the 63 Brigade, expressing optimism for even greater results.
