ABRAKA – DETERMINED to promote unity and peace amongst students of Delta State University, Abraka, the Students Union Government (SUG) organised “Garri Festival” aimed at promoting unity, peace, and tranquillity among students and campus management.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Student Union Government (SUG) Director of Information and Chairman, Disciplinary Committee, Comrade Mike Abraham Pace (IGWE) said the event was organised to bring students, irrespective of their faculties/departments, together beyond academic activities.
He explained further that the programme was not limited to his course mates but was created for all students across different departments.
While expressing excitement, the Information Director said the encouraging response from the participants showed that the programme created a memorable experience and strengthened relationships among students.
Speaking further, he explained that Garri is one of the most important foods in many Nigerian homes because it is produced from cassava and serves as a carbohydrate-rich source of energy. He noted that garri remains one of the easiest and most accessible meals for many students during academic activities.
While highlighting challenges facing Garri producers, he said,
incessant insecurity on farmland and farmers, flooding and poor road networks for transporting farm products to the final consumers.
Comrade Peace noted that despite these challenges bedevilling cassava farming, Garri continues to play an important role in bringing people together and building community relationships.
He further revealed that more activities and larger editions of the programme should be expected in the future, encouraging students to continue supporting initiatives that promote student engagement and campus life.
Students also shared their experiences during the event. According to Isaac Oghenesero from the Film and Multimedia Department, the festival created a fun atmosphere where students could relax and enjoy traditional food together. He described garri as a popular Nigerian food because of its affordability and ease of preparation.
Also speaking, Rosemary Akposanfagha, a 100-level student from the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, described the Garri Festival as an enjoyable experience. She explained that garri prepared in Delta State compares favourably with that from other places and noted that it remains one of the fastest and easiest meals students can prepare.
The event ended with appreciation from participants and renewed expectations for future editions of the Garri Festival at Delta State University, Abraka.
