Former Deputy President of the 9th Senate and National Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidate for Delta Central, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has claimed that armed men attacked an NDC campaign venue in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, threatening to kill him and the party’s campaign coordinator in the area.
Omo-Agege issued a statement on Thursday, August 20, 2026, accusing Emmanuel Erube, whom he identified as the Development Committee Chairman of Jakpa, of leading the group that allegedly assaulted the venue.
According to the senator, more than 50 armed men stormed the venue around 5:30am, pulling down canopies and destroying campaign materials prepared for the meeting.
Omo-Agege alleged that Erube and members of his group also threatened to kill him and the NDC Uvwie Campaign Coordinator, Olorogun Dr. Esere Ejifoma Atumu, if he attended the campaign event.
The former Senate Deputy President described the incident as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the opposition in Delta State and claimed the attackers were linked to the state government’s political structure.
He further accused Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of being responsible for the alleged attack, asserting that the governor had previously made threats against his life.
“I hold Governor Sheriff Oborevwori directly responsible and culpable for this,” Omo-Agege stated, alleging that the governor had privately threatened to have him killed.
The senator called the incident an “attack on democracy” and urged security agencies to investigate the alleged assault promptly and prosecute those responsible.
He specifically demanded that the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrest Erube and his group members, while investigating their funding sources.
Omo-Agege also appealed to the Delta State Commissioner of Police to provide 24-hour security for himself, Atumu, campaign teams, and supporters across the state.
He further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the United States Embassy, the European Union, the African Union, and civil society organisations to monitor the situation in Delta State, deploying observers and human rights monitors ahead of elections.
The NDC candidate urged residents of Uvwie and other areas of Delta State not to be intimidated by the incident, emphasising that his campaign would continue.
“We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. The fight for a New Delta continues,” he declared.
As of the time of this report, the allegations contained in Omo-Agege’s statement had not been independently verified, and no response from Governor Oborevwori, Erube, or the Delta State Police Command was included in the statement.
