By ERHEREBUE JULIET (DELSU Student)
ABRAKA – AHEAD of the Delta State University, Abraka Students Union Government (SUG) elections, concerned students of the University have called for greater transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance in the University community as preparations begin for the next Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections.
The Concerned students made the call recently during the Congress of the University students’ body, where representatives from various faculties highlighted issues bedevilling their faculties, departments and the students in general.
The Concerned students lamented communication gaps between elected officials and students of the University, saying students are not adequately informed about decisions affecting their welfare and academic activities. They emphasised the need for stronger engagement between student leaders and the students they represent.
The Concerned students woo aspirants vying for different positions to focus on policies that will address students’ welfare, academic concerns, and campus development.
“Student leaders should remain accessible and accountable to those who elected them into office, students should have a voice in matters affecting campus life regardless of their faculty, department, or level of study”.
While calling on the incoming SUG leaders to prioritise accountability, Transparency inclusive politics, student-oriented policies and programmes that will enhance student welfare, they encouraged students to actively participate in the electoral process by attending political meetings, asking questions, and voting responsibly.
“Participation in campus politics could strengthen democratic values among students while promoting accountability among leaders; it can also contribute to better decision-making and help address issues affecting the university community”.
Earlier, the President of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Comr. Oghenetejiri Akpovogbeta said, “I represent my faculty at the student level. I foster peace, unity, and the welfare of students. It is my responsibility to ensure that the association continues to grow and to nurture student leaders at both the faculty and SUG levels to represent us effectively”.
