KOGI – Ahead of the 2027 general Elections in the country, the Kogi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was thrown into a sorrowful mood on Friday following the sudden death of its Ijumu Local Government chairman, Hon. Oyewole Mayowa Solomon.
The Rainbow Newspaper source, Arise News, said the APC chairman, Solomon, reportedly slumped and died during a peace and reconciliation meeting held at the Iyara Town Hall, the administrative headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area on Friday.
According to the source, efforts were immediately made to administer first aid, and he was rushed to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba, but he was pronounced dead by the medical doctor on duty shortly after he arrived at the hospital.
It was learnt that the meeting was convened by the former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Hon. Funsho Olumoko, who was recently tasked by the Ijumu Consultative Forum (ICF) to harmonise political interests in the council area.
The meeting was aimed at reconciling factions, resolving internal disputes and promoting unity among party stakeholders ahead of future political engagements.
It would be recalled that the earlier meeting of the party held in Iyara, where APC stakeholders endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo for second terms but meeting ended in friction over local government leadership, leading to a stage walkout by the council chairman of the party, Mr Oyewole Mayowa Solomon and several top government functionaries.
The Rainbow Newspaper reported that Friday’s meeting, which was intended to bridge those divisions, brought together selected political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, and government appointees representing all 15 wards in Ijumu Local Government Area.
The sudden death of the APC chieftain has cast uncertainty over ongoing efforts to unify the party’s ranks in Kogi West ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As at the time of filing this report, the cause of his death was yet to be ascertained neither formal statement had been issued by the APC state executive or local authorities at the time of filing this report.
