Rural Funding: Delta Govt Increases Rural Infrastructure Budget From N2.1B to N5B Per LGA

ASABA – DETERMINED to enhance rural connectivity and to boost the economic productivity of Delta State, the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has approved an increase of the rural infrastructure budget of the twenty-five (25) LGAs of the state from N2.1billion to N5 billion ahead of the 2025 fiscal year.
The development is part of his administration’s commitment to an inclusive development and security through major policy initiatives ahead of the 2025 fiscal year.
It would be recalled that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has earlier approved an increase in rural road funding from ₦ 1 billion per local government area in 2024 to ₦2.1 billion in 2025, but has further increased it to ₦5 billion projected for 2026 ahead of the 2025 fiscal year.
According to the state Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori believes that development must be balanced and far-reaching.
His word: “Our focus is to ensure that every community, regardless of size or population, enjoys access to basic infrastructure, the governor believes that development must be balanced and far-reaching.”
The administration also clarified its approach to debt repayment and fiscal responsibility. Despite settling DESOPADEC ₦8.4 billion inherited contractual obligations, the government maintains strong financial health through disciplined project management and prompt contractor payments.
Earlier, the Delta State government launched the State Security Trust Fund to enhance the operational capacity of security agencies through private sector participation and inter-agency cooperation.
The initiative was aimed at strengthening logistics, communication, and mobility, ensuring a safer and more secure Delta.
“Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution makes the security and welfare of citizens the government’s top priority,” Aniagwu noted. “This fund ensures we meet that constitutional responsibility efficiently.”
